How to play Bollywood dumb charades
Two teams. One person acts out a Hindi film title in silence while their own team guesses, inside a fixed time.
Who picks the film matters more than which film. The opposing team should choose it and whisper it to the actor. A team that picks its own titles picks softly, and the game stops being a game.
The opening signals. Fingers for the number of words in the title. Fingers again for which word is being acted. A chopping motion at the forearm for a shorter version of a word. A tug on the ear for sounds like. Agree these before the first turn.
Time. Ninety seconds suits most rooms. Sixty for a group that plays often. Two minutes for a mixed room with grandparents and children on the same team, which is what this game is best at.
Picking a difficulty that fits the room
Easy titles are short, famous, and carry one strong image. They are for warming up, and for the person who did not want to play.
Medium is where most of an evening should sit. Long enough to need the word-count signal, familiar enough that the room gets there.
Hard titles hide something that resists being mimed. A name, an abstract noun, a number nobody expects to be a number. I would not open on one. A hard title dropped on a cold room produces a minute of silence and somebody quietly deciding they are done playing.
Filter by decade too. A room of cousins in their fifties and a room of cousins in their twenties do not share a film set, and mixing decades is kinder than picking one.
Dumb Charades Rules and Questions
How do you play dumb charades?
One person picks a movie title and acts it out while their team guesses. No talking, no mouthing the words, no pointing at things in the room. The team gets a fixed time to guess, then the turn passes to the other side.
What are the dumb charades hand signs?
Hold up fingers for the number of words in the title, then hold up fingers again to show which word you are acting. A chopping motion at your forearm means a shorter version of a word. Tugging your ear means sounds like. Agree on the signs before the first turn, not during someone's turn.
How long should each charades turn be?
Ninety seconds is the usual turn, and two minutes is fair for harder titles. Shorter turns keep the energy up. Longer turns are kinder to a room that has only just sat down.
How do you play charades with a large group?
Split into two teams and seat them apart, so guesses do not carry across the room. Above sixteen players, run three teams and rotate, which keeps the wait between turns short. Big teams are slower because everyone shouts at once.
How do you score charades?
The simplest scoring is one point for every title guessed inside the time limit. Some groups add a bonus point for guessing in under thirty seconds, or take one away for a skipped title. Settle the rule before you start, because arguing about it later becomes its own game.
Who should pick the movie in dumb charades?
The opposing team, always. They choose the title and whisper it to the actor. A team that picks its own films picks easy ones, and the round stops being competitive.
Is it spelled dumb charades or damsharas?
Both point at the same game. Damsharas is the phonetic spelling people type after only ever hearing the name said out loud, and you will also see dumsharaz and the whole thing written as one word. Nothing about how it is played changes.
