Charades collapses at the same point every time. Somebody picks a film nobody has seen, the round dies in silence, and the next person refuses to stand up. The game is fine. The list is the problem.

Below are the rules worth agreeing before you start, twenty five films that hold up in a real room, and what to do when a title will not come out. If you would rather not write chits at all, the charades generator deals titles one at a time.

What makes a Bollywood film work for charades?

A film works when the title breaks into pieces you can act, and when the film behind it has one scene the whole room pictures the same way.

The title gives the actor somewhere to start. The scene gives them somewhere to go when the words run out, which they do around the thirty second mark on almost every turn.

A title that offers neither is what kills a round. Single abstract nouns are the usual suspect. So is anything that was enormous for one year and gone the next.

How do you play Bollywood charades?

Two teams, one actor at a time, one film title, no speaking, and a timer everyone can see.

Sixty seconds is where most rooms settle. Ninety if people are new to it. Longer than that and the watching team stops watching, which is the real failure mode rather than anybody guessing wrong.

Agree four signals before the first turn. One for film, one for the number of words, one for which word is being acted, one for sounds like. Every argument later in the evening is an argument about one of those four.

Silence means silence. No humming the song, no mouthing, no cough that happens to rhyme with the answer.

Give each team one pass. A stuck turn with no way out flattens the room, and the pass costs nothing.

Twenty five Bollywood movies for charades

Ordered roughly from the ones everyone knows to the recent ones, so you can start at either end depending on who is playing.

1. Sholay (1975)

One word, and the room knows it before you finish. Go to the motorcycle with the sidecar, or the coin. Both are faster than trying to mime the word.

2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Four words and none of them worth acting. Use the train, the hand reaching down, the mustard fields. Anyone who has seen it once has it by the second gesture.

3. 3 Idiots (2009)

Three fingers, then somebody being foolish. The second word is an invitation to overact and there is always a volunteer.

4. Lagaan (2001)

Start with the cricket rather than the word. Bat, bowl, appeal. The room gets there long before anyone thinks about tax.

5. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

A crown, then a court, then somebody very large in charge of both. The hyphenated middle is the part to skip entirely.

6. Mother India (1957)

Two words, both of them simple, and the trouble is that the first one sends the room down a family tree for thirty seconds.

7. Deewaar (1975)

One word meaning wall. Build one with your hands. The difficulty is that a mimed wall looks like a mimed box to about half a room.

8. Pyaasa (1957)

Thirst. Mime drinking, then take it away. Short, physical, and still harder than it looks because thirst and hunger share a gesture.

9. Guide (1965)

Point at yourself, then point the way. It is one of the few titles where the obvious mime is also the right one.

10. Anand (1971)

A name and also a word for joy, which gives you two routes. Take the joy, because the room will not guess a name from nothing.

11. Hera Pheri (2000)

Two words that rhyme and mean roughly swapping things around. Mime a swap, twice, faster the second time.

12. Munna Bhai MBBS (2003)

A name, then a brother, then three letters. Do the stethoscope first and let the name follow, because the letters will never arrive on their own.

13. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

Happy, then sad, then repeat. It is the easiest four word title in Bollywood and it still takes people forty seconds.

14. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)

Ignore the first word. The subtitle is a love story and that is what the room will guess from.

15. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Four words of pure grammar. Skip them. Act three friends, a car, and somebody falling backwards out of a plane.

16. Queen (2013)

A crown, and then a long wait while the room works out that it means exactly what it looks like.

17. Vicky Donor (2012)

A name and a word most rooms will not say out loud in front of relatives, which is most of the entertainment.

18. Kahaani (2012)

Story. Open a book with your hands. The word is abstract but the gesture for it is not, which makes this a good one to open with.

19. PK (2014)

Two letters. There is nothing to act, so this lives entirely on the alien, the tilted head, and the earphones.

20. Dangal (2016)

Wrestle somebody. That is the whole clue and it is still one of the fastest titles on this list.

21. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

Two words, both names, both untouchable. Act the little girl and the long walk instead and let the room fill in the rest.

22. Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)

The subtitle does the work. Mime precision, then an operation, then let somebody shout the line everyone shouts.

23. Gully Boy (2019)

A narrow street, then a young man, then the rap. Three gestures and most rooms only need two.

24. Pathaan (2023)

One word and it is a name. There is no mime for it, so this becomes a syllable count and a sounds-like, and it usually works.

25. Jawan (2023)

One word meaning a young soldier. Salute, then look young. The shortest title here and not the easiest.

What do you do with a long title?

Signal the number of words, then go straight to the word that has a thing in it, whichever position it sits in.

Acting a title in order is the most common mistake at a game night. Nobody is scoring you on sequence. If the fourth word is the only one with an object in it, start there and let the room assemble the rest backwards.

Grammar words are not worth acting at all. Skip them and hold up fingers for the gaps.

How do you act out long Bollywood movie titles?

Find the one word in the title that names a physical thing and start there, regardless of where it sits. Most long titles have exactly one, a bride, a wall, a story, a soldier. Signal the word count first so the room knows how many pieces it is collecting, then deliver your best word rather than your first. Teams reassemble a title out of order far more easily than people expect, and starting at the beginning wastes the time you will need at the end.

What if nobody guesses the film?

Stop acting the film and start acting the words. A team that has never seen the movie can still build the title out of sounds and syllables, and a title assembled that way counts exactly the same. If you have a pass, spend it rather than running down the clock to prove a point. A film nobody in the room has seen is a flaw in the list, not a test of the actor, and the game recovers faster if you move on.

Should you allow props and sounds?

Props yes, sounds no. A room that can pick up a cushion, a spoon or a phone has far more to work with, and it speeds the game up. Sounds are different, because the whole game is built on their absence, and once humming is allowed somebody will hum the title track and end the round in four seconds. Decide both before the first turn, because arguing about it mid-round takes longer than the round.

How do you make it harder for people who play a lot?

Cut the clock before you change the films. Going from ninety seconds to forty five makes the same list feel twice as hard and the room feels it immediately. After that, ban props, or require the actor to use one hand. Adding obscure films is the option that looks like it should work and does not, because a title nobody knows produces silence rather than effort.

How many films do you need for an evening?

About twenty for eight people playing for an hour. Groups get through them faster than anyone expects, and a list that runs out mid-evening puts one person on their phone hunting for more while everybody else waits. Decide the number before the first round rather than during the third, and keep a few spare for the rounds that end in four seconds.
